Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud A perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Phragmites gramineae, with well-developed grape rhizomes and hollow and smooth stems. The leaves are needle-shaped and linear, arranged in two rows. Paniculate inflorescences are slightly bent downward, with white pilose between axils of lower branches. The fruit is lanceolate. Flowering period is in July. Fruiting period is from August to November.
Reed is distributed throughout China and is common in rivers, lakes, ponds, ditches and low wetlands. Reed can adapt to different ecological environment, like to be born in the marshland, floodplain and shallow lake environment called wetland reed; distribution in the arid area oasis farmland periphery, saline alkali land, and even some desert areas and other environment called xerophytic reed. Reed reproductive ability, under suitable conditions, both seeds, rhizomes and stems can be planted.

The reed inflorescence is majestic and beautiful. It is often used as an ornamental plant at the low humidity of the lake and river bank. It has the functions of fixing dike, slope protection and weed control. The rod is used as a raw material for papermaking or as a woven curtain and a shed building material. The rhizome is used for medicine. Reed is also an important part of wetland marsh environment, and the ecological value of reed wetland has the reputation of "second forest", which plays an irreplaceable role in purifying water, regulating climate and protecting biodiversity.
