Arundo donax , tall perennial gramineous plants, with upright and hollow stems, large and flat leaves, plants as high as 2~6 m, 1~3cm thick, leaves 30~60cm long and 3~5cm wide, underground rhizomes are thick and branched, inflorescences are extracted from the top of stems in autumn, inflorescences are broom-shaped, 9~12 months are flower and fruit stages, and the biomass is large after maturity.
It is native to China and reproduces asexually. It spread to the Mediterranean and was introduced to California as a roofing material. After screening, genetic improvement and domestication of more than 600 wild Arundo bamboo germplasm resources collected by Chinese scientists in the past ten years, a variety of new polyploid super Arundo varieties have been cultivated. The yield of super reed bamboo is high. It is planted in the south and north of China. The annual dry biomass per mu is 3-10 tons, which is 6-20 times that of reed and 3-10 times that of eucalyptus. Once planted, continuous harvest 15-20 years. It is a nitrogen-fixing plant with low management cost and can be mechanized. It can be planted in saline-alkali land, tidal flat land, swamp land, sandy wasteland, barren land and waste mining area with precipitation above 500mm, above minus 20°C and salt content below 15 ‰ south of 42°C north latitude.
